Our Story

How we started…

GYI began with four siblings and one shared vision: a belief that young people hold the power to lead change - not someday in the future, but right now.

What began as local initiatives driven by a desire to challenge inequality and create meaningful change, has grown into a global, youth-led nonprofit that brings together young leaders from across continents, backgrounds, and experiences, all united by a common purpose: to create a more just and equitable world.

From the beginning, GYI was shaped by the idea that real change starts when young people are given the chance to lead with the tools, support, and community to back them. Today, GYI empowers youth through leadership development, advocacy training, skill-building workshops, fundraising initiatives, campaigns, networking, and hands-on opportunities to take action locally and globally.

The heart of GYI lies in its growing network of passionate changemakers: youth who are launching community initiatives, organizing campaigns, building awareness, and raising their voices on the issues that matter most - from climate justice and education to mental health and human rights.

As GYI expanded internationally, it never lost sight of its original mission: to amplify youth voices, foster meaningful connection, and support young people in turning their ideas into impact. The organization continues to be shaped by the energy, creativity, and leadership of youth from around the world.

Alongside their advocacy work, the founders of GYI also perform together as the band, DEYSofficial, using music as a way to celebrate community, inspire hope, and bring people together. Their songs, centered around unity, resilience, and joy, offer a powerful reminder that change is not only possible - it can be deeply human and beautifully shared.

From its roots in Toronto to its reach across the globe, GYI stands as a testament to what’s possible when young people lead - not someday, but right now.
